The business model of Ecovative: Cultivating a greener tomorrow.

Imagine a world where mushrooms aren't just a tasty topping on your pizza but a revolutionary force for sustainable change. Meet Ecovative, a company that has harnessed the incredible power of mycelium - the intricate root system of mushrooms - to create a wave of eco-friendly innovation. In this blog post you will read all about how they are going their business.

A story of innovation and growth.

Before we get started and dive into the fascinating world of Ecovative, let’s rewind 16 years. Plastic was king, and sustainability was often just a buzzword. But then, enter Even and Gavin, two students attending an inventor studio class at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. They soon discovered the potential of the root of fungus and that it could be much more than just nature’s decomposer - it could be the solution to our plastic problem. This revelation sparked a journey that would redefine sustainable practices and change the game.

Goodbye harmful plastics, Hello biodegradable alternatives.

As Ecovative got off the ground, they created their first sustainable alternative for plastic packaging; Mushroom Packaging. Not only can this fungi-based packaging protect whatever is being shipped, but afterward it can be used as compost for your backyard. A win-win for our planet and your wallet.

But the story doesn’t end there. What began as an eco-conscious alternative to plastic packaging quickly sprouted into a full-fledged movement. The creatives behind Ecovative discovered that their AirMycelium Technology could be used to create much more, creating an impressive portfolio of products From mycelium-based building materials to Forager™ hides (a leather alternative), single-use beauty products, MyForest Food's™ mycelium bacon, and a range of whole-food, meat-free ingredients. The big shift here is clear – a move towards circularity.

“One company can’t save the planet, which is why we’re teaming up with anyone who sees the value in what we’re growing. It is our goal to form a global mycelial web of partner producers, to steadily replace numerous unsustainable materials with those that come from nature, and return to nature when their use is through.” – Ecovative.

Putting the Us in Fungus.

Ecovative knows saving the planet takes more than a village. Collaboration is their core belief, and they are extending a hand to like-minded companies eager to create a sustainable future. Their business model revolves around this collaborative spirit, with its revenue model mainly consisting of licensing their AirMycelium Technology and earning royalty fees on products created with it. They have worked with IKEA, swapping Styrofoam for mycelium-based packaging, and Ecco, creating mycelium-infused leather. By sharing their technology, Ecovative fosters change that benefits people, planet, and profit.

Besides the world's largest mycelium production facility, Ecovative has established the groundbreaking Mycelium Foundry. This research and development hub taps into a world-class biological library, fine-tuning different mushroom strains' properties. It is a testing ground for mycelium-based wonders, supporting product development from initial research to commercial scaling.
