The portfolio map

One tool to map them all. Plot your current business models and future business opportunities on one page so you can assess, prioritize, and strategize.

The portfolio map

What it is

The Portfolio Map plots your current business models and your future business opportunities on one page. Existing businesses appear alongside the ideas and ventures meant to replace or extend them, so the whole portfolio, from core to experiment, becomes visible at once.

What you use it for

Use it to manage innovation as a portfolio instead of a collection of pet projects. On one page you can see whether you are over-invested in the core and starving the future, which opportunities deserve the next round of investment, and which projects should be stopped. It turns the innovation conversation from anecdotes into an overview you can strategize on.

How to work with it

Map everything: every running business model and every initiative that consumes people or money. Assess each one on the risk that remains and the value it could create, then decide per item: invest, improve, test further or kill. Repeat the exercise on a rhythm, quarterly works well, because a portfolio map you made once is a photograph, and what you need is a film.

Free to download, print and use. Helping people help themselves starts with the tools to do it.
