5 key learnings from the Circular Economy Lab
Discipline
Business design

Over 90 days, BMI took 27 leading innovators, disruptors, entrepreneurs, and business operators on an immersive learning journey to create solutions that accelerate the circular economy in Queensland. Delivered with Coreo, the Queensland Circular Economy Lab was the first of its kind in Australia and produced five investable circular initiatives.

The challenge

The Lab set out to create new circular business models and aligned value propositions delivering triple bottom line impact: environmental, economic, and social. Teams had to look beyond individual corporate priorities to partner for success, and beyond 'sustainability' to solutions that fundamentally shift consumer and business behaviors through the mechanics of the business model.

Our approach

Across four intensive workshops over three months, cross-industry teams of corporates, not-for-profits, government, and academia cycled through BMI's award-winning Double Loop, each pursuing a distinct opportunity from meat-packaging to household energy. Teams rapidly tested ideas and validated assumptions between workshops across their value chains, supported by an expert-in-residence from Coreo.

The results

  • Five new circular ventures emerged: KAAS (Kitchen As A Subscription, led by Lendlease), C-Suite (JLL and EarthCheck), Ripple (Meat and Livestock Australia), United for Change (Container Exchange and partners), and 3P (SUEZ-led soft plastics elimination).
  • Teams pitched to a judging panel including Shark Tank's Glen Richards for a share of $100K seed funding from the Queensland Department of Environment and Science.
  • Since pitch night, teams have accelerated their newly formed ventures to roll them out across Queensland and beyond.
“Shaping a circular economy is one of the biggest challenges of our time, and I believe the creative discipline of design thinking with a focus on co-innovation is the ideal approach for tackling such a systemic challenge.”Michael Eales, Managing Director, Business Models Inc. Australia

The method stayed with the team. It always does.
