SPAR
SPAR, a network of 13,000 shops run by independent entrepreneurs, wanted to accelerate its digital shift by creating strong online value propositions for its shop owners. BMI partnered with the newly appointed Board to design a multi-year growth strategy and turn ideas into validated digital propositions through co-creation and in-market experiments.

The challenge
SPAR's business model is designed around physical touchpoints, but online shopping has become the default. The Board needed to stay connected to local communities in a digital world and accelerate the digital shift with strong online value propositions for SPAR entrepreneurs.
Our approach
BMI first sharpened the Board's vision and designed a multi-year growth strategy with clear success criteria. In co-creation with a bigger team, new markets were identified, business model options ideated and value propositions sketched (such as staff-free shopping experiences); innovation teams then built digital prototypes and validated critical assumptions through six months of in-market experiments with entrepreneurs and consumers.
The results
- A shared vision that brought clarity to SPAR's strategic direction for the years ahead.
- Teams that took ownership of growth projects, with the first value propositions now live.
- Business model innovation embedded as an integral part of SPAR's daily operations, with teams continuously identifying and exploring new growth options.
The method stayed with the team. It always does.
